Imagine building a web app without typing a single line of code. Or at least, not in the traditional sense. Welcome to the era of vibe coding, where artificial intelligence is transforming software development into a high-speed, creative collaboration between humans and machines.


It all began with former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy’s tweet:

“There’s a new kind of coding I call “vibe coding”, where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists. It’s possible because the LLMs (e.g. Cursor Composer w Sonnet) are getting too good. Also I just talk to Composer with SuperWhisper so I barely even touch the keyboard. I ask for the dumbest things like “decrease the padding on the sidebar by half” because I’m too lazy to find it. I “Accept All” always, I don’t read the diffs anymore. When I get error messages I just copy paste them in with no comment, usually that fixes it. The code grows beyond my usual comprehension, I’d have to really read through it for a while. Sometimes the LLMs can’t fix a bug so I just work around it or ask for random changes until it goes away. It’s not too bad for throwaway weekend projects, but still quite amusing. I’m building a project or webapp, but it’s not really coding - I just see stuff, say stuff, run stuff, and copy paste stuff, and it mostly works.”

These tools aren’t just speeding things up, they’re transforming workflows. For example, Vanguard’s engineering team has cut prototype times from two weeks to 20 minutes by collaborating with AI instead of passing specs between teams.

It's Not Just Code—It’s Velocity


The business case for vibe coding is simple: speed. Companies want to accelerate product delivery without compromising creativity. CTOs are reporting productivity boosts of up to 40% when using AI-enhanced tools—especially when dealing with repetitive or boilerplate code.


But speed isn’t the only benefit. Vibe coding enables developers to focus on the higher-level thinking that machines still can’t master: solving real-world problems, designing user experiences, and making strategic decisions.


Turns out that the future of engineering will be less about code authorship, and more about validation, quality assurance, and problem-solving.


The Risks: Governance, Security, and Control


Despite its promise, vibe coding isn’t without risk—especially in corporate environments. One major concern is shadow IT, where employees (like HR or marketing staff) might build apps without oversight, potentially bypassing security protocols. CIOs are working to establish governance frameworks to ensure that AI-generated code meets compliance and quality standards.


Another limitation: AI doesn’t always know what it doesn’t know. Vibe coding tools might confidently produce insecure or buggy code; especially when used for more complex or production-grade systems. Developers must still act as overseers, defining clear boundaries, testing thoroughly, and intervening when AI makes the wrong call.


Empowering New Creators


What makes vibe coding revolutionary isn’t just what it does for seasoned developers. It's what it unlocks for everyone else. Tools like Replit, Cursor, and Copilot are making it possible for people with little to no coding background to create apps and websites. This democratization of development is lowering the barrier to innovation, allowing more people to bring their ideas to life.


Still, Karpathy himself cautions that vibe coding is best suited for smaller or internal-facing projects, at least for now. As systems grow in complexity, human judgment, contextual understanding, and attention to detail remain irreplaceable.

Vibe coding isn’t about replacing developers with AI. It’s about redefining the relationship between humans and machines. The most powerful outcomes happen when developers lean into the strengths of both, letting AI handle the heavy lifting while they drive the vision and validate the results.


We’re witnessing the start of a major shift in how software is conceived, built, and deployed. And while the term "vibe coding" may have started as a meme, its impact on the tech world is becoming very real.
